[Infographic] Working from home
The infographic below reflects the reality even though it’s based on an American survey from Career Builder.
According to the infographic, home workers feel more productive at the office by 37% against 29% at home. The biggest distractions are household chores, TV, pets, errants, the Internet and kids. However I think telecommuters work longer hours. I work very late at night.
One thing that the survey does not show is that you’re alone. Your colleagues don’t disturb you, you don’t have to dress up and you can eat in front of your computer screen. But still, you get distracted. Having coworkers is great because you can share impressions, important information and they can help you solve a problem more rapidly. Communicating by email or chat (like Skype or MSN) can be time consuming and you might encounter misunderstandings. So, if you want to succeed as a telecommuter. You should follow these rules:
- wake up early as if you were going to work,
- work in a closed office, not in your bedroom or living room,
- talk to your colleagues on a regular basis,
- schedule your breaks in advance,
- work from a coffee shop.
As of me, I’d rather work in an office with colleagues. :)
